A good espresso starts with the bean, the grind, and the machine — but it ends with the barista and their tools. The right equipment makes the difference between an excellent cup of coffee and an ordinary one. In this guide, we walk through the essential barista tools that every professional coffee shop needs.
The tamper
You use the tamper to evenly compress the coffee grounds in the portafilter. A good tamper has the exact diameter of your portafilter (usually 58 mm for professional machines) and fits comfortably in the hand. Material: stainless steel or aluminum, with a flat or slightly convex base. Quality here pays off immediately in better extraction.
The distribution tool (WDT or leveler)
Before you tamp, a distribution tool ensures an even spread of coffee grounds in the portafilter. This prevents channeling — the phenomenon where water finds a path through the grounds and under-extracts. A small investment with a major impact on consistency.
The knock box
After pulling an espresso, the spent coffee grounds (the puck) must be knocked out of the portafilter. A solid stainless steel knock box is more hygienic than a loose container and works faster. Choose a model that sits firmly on your workspace.
Milk pitchers
For cappuccinos, latte macchiatos, and flat whites, you need good milk pitchers. Opt for stainless steel pitchers in the right sizes: 350 ml for individual servings, 600 ml for multiple cups at once. A good milk pitcher has a slim spout for latte art. Available in our barista tools collection.
Thermometer
The perfect milk temperature for latte art is between 60–65°C. An accurate coffee thermometer gives you control over the steaming process and ensures consistent texture, every single time.
Cleaning materials
Clean equipment is not optional — it is a requirement for flavorful coffee and the longevity of your machine:
- Cleaning powder for the espresso machine — for weekly or daily backflushing
- Blind filter for backflushing the group head
- Group brush for cleaning the group head
- Drip mat for the bar workspace
We carry products from the specialized brand PulyCaff — from cleaning tablets to liquid cleaning agents for professional machines. View our barista tools assortment.
The right coffee service
The tools are one side of the story — the service is the other. For espresso, use coffee glasses of 50–80 ml; for cappuccino, 150–250 ml; and for latte macchiato, a tall glass of 300–500 ml. Check out our complete coffee cups and glasses collection.
